Where Harry Kane’s big-money move stands in British football history

Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane for an initial £100million.

The fee could eventually rise to £120m including add-ons, which would be a record for a British player.

Here, the PA news agency compares the transfer with previous big-money signings.

Most expensive British players

Based on initial transfer fees, Kane is tied at the top of the list of most expensive British players of all-time.

He joins England team-mates and fellow £100m men Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, with Rice having moved from West Ham to Arsenal in July and Grealish leaving Aston Villa for Manchester City in 2021.

Jude Bellingham is fourth, with Real Madrid paying Borussia Dortmund an initial £88.5m for his services in Jun…

Costa: Brazil can win 2018 World Cup

Brazil attacker Douglas Costa believes his nation have the quality to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The South Americans last won the crown in 2002, while they were humiliated on home soil two years ago in an embarrassing 7-1 semi-final loss to Germany.

But finally winning Olympic football gold has given Brazil a boost, as have decent performances that see them sit second in CONMEBOL qualifying.

Costa feels that under coach Tite, appointed in June, his team can be successful in Russia.

I m world champion with Brazil [in 2018], he told Abendzeitung.

We have what it takes in the team. There is a big quality with players like Neymar and [Philippe] Coutinho. The new coach is also good.

If we find ourselves as a team, we are among the fav…

York boss Neal Ardley: We found a way to win the game

York manager Neal Ardley admitted his team rode their luck to “hang on” for a 2-1 FA Cup first round replay victory over Chester.

Captain Lenell John-Lewis bagged a brace to put the hosts in the ascendancy midway through the second period but David Stockdale was required to make two fine saves either side of a 71st-minute George Glendon reply.

York survived to book a televised Friday night home clash with 2013 cup winners Wigan on December 1 but Ardley said: “We started the game really well and could have been a couple up but, at half-time, their manager had a shout at them and we knew they would up their game because it was a cup tie and they hadn’t laid a glove on us.

“We then didn’t adapt to their intensity and they came out on the front foot while…

Lille win Ligue 1 2020-21: The stats behind Les Dogues´ stunning title win

Lille secured their first Ligue 1 title in 10 years on Sunday, ending Paris Saint-Germain s dominance of France s top tier.

It has been an incredible season for Christophe Galtier s team, who finished fourth in the shortened 2019-20 campaign.

But a talented squad full of vibrant, youthful attackers – albeit spearheaded by veteran campaigner Burak Yilmaz – has clinched Ligue 1 title number four for the club, with their success confirmed when they beat Angers 2-1 on the final day of the campaign.

Eden Hazard was among the stars to propel Lille to their last title, in 2011, with Les Douges also triumphing in 1946 and 1954.

PSG finished top in the previous three seasons, since Monaco s Kylian Mbappe-inspired win in 2016-17. Indeed, it is only the sec…

A sparkling and charming human being – football pays tribute to Craig Brown

Past colleagues and players of Craig Brown have spoken of their recollections of the former Scotland manager following his death at the age of 82.

Here are some of the tributes to the man who led Scotland to consecutive major tournaments in the late 1990s and later managed Preston, Motherwell and Aberdeen.

Former Clyde and Scotland winger Pat Nevin, whose professional career began after an offer from then-Bully Wee manager Brown, wrote on Twitter: “Missing my old gaffer and friend Craig Brown already. What a sparkling, lovely, charming, talented and caring human being. I wouldn’t have had the life I did without him.”

Simeone takes positives but Oblak slams ´pitiful´ Atletico performance

Jan Oblak hit out at a pitiful performance from Atletico Madrid after their 4-0 loss to Benfica in the Champions League.

Benfica recorded their joint-biggest victory in a Champions League home match (alongside 5-1 vs Club Brugge in March 2023), as Atletico suffered their heaviest ever defeat to Portuguese opposition in the competition.

Atletico had only four shots, failing to get any of them on target, and mustered just 0.24 expected goals (xG).

Benfica, on the other hand, had 19 shots and accumulated 4.46 xG.

While Diego Simeone believed there were positives to take, Oblak, who made six saves to keep the scoreline from getting even more humiliating, was far more scathing of Atletico s display in Lisbon.

It s pitiful to lose like this, it s not a…

Hamren content ahead of Euro 2012

Sweden coach Erik Hamren has spoken of his delight at seeing his team defeat Serbia in their final warm-up fixture before Euro 2012.

Goals from Ola Toivonen and Zlatan Ibrahimovic ensured the Swedes go to the championships in Poland and Ukraine on the back of two straight victories prior to facing Ukraine on Monday.

Of the friendly successes, Hamren told SVT Sport: It has been two good games for us and we have got what we wanted. Then we have a few days in Kiev to prepare.

Hamren is confident the Swedes can cause a shock and progress from Group D, which also includes England and France.

Then it is as I said before, we can have three good matches in Kiev but to move forward we will encounter great resistance, he said.

But we ve got a good feeli…

Euro 2012 Group C preview: Italy v Croatia

Croatia manager Slaven Bilic knows his side are in for a tough test when they take on Italy in Poznan at Euro 2012 on Thursday.

Bilic s side will enter the Group C encounter full of confidence after a comfortable 3-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in their tournament opener.

Mario Mandzukic netted a double in the victory while wide men Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic impressed in a triumph that sent the Croatians to the top of a difficult group that contains Italy and Spain.

But Bilic is fully aware that his side s two remaining matches will be a tougher proposition and he expects the Italians to be just as strong as Spain, the current world and European champions.

Italy are strong, they think about us and about our play, Bilic said.
